Johnny Unitas
Johnny Unitas lasted until the 9th round of the 1955 NFL Draft when the Pittsburgh Steelers finally selected him with the 102nd overall pick. However, the Steelers cut him before the season began.Unitas was then picked up by the Baltimore Colts where he would spend the next 17 seasons of his legendary 18 season career. Unitas was a 3 time MVP and 10 time Pro Bowler for the Colts. He also helped led them to 3 NFL Championships, including the Greatest Game Ever Played (the 1958 NFL Championship Game). Unitas held the record for consecutive games with 47 consecutive games with a TD pass until Drew Brees recently broke the record. The Golden Arm, as Unitas was called, passed for 40,239 career yards, good for # 14 on the all-time list; however, he played in an era in which passing wasn’t as prevalent as it is today. Only Fran Tarkenton had more passing yards among quarterbacks in NFL history whose career ended prior to 1980. Johnny Unitas retired in 1973 and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979.
