ANDREW CARNEGIE RETIRES AND GIVES AWAY HIS FORTUNE
March 13, 1901
Pittsburgh, Pa.
Andrew Carnegie announced today that he is retiring from business and will spend the remainder of his days giving away his fortune, which is now estimated to be greater than $ 300 Million dollars. The steel baron made his announcement in a letter addressed to “the good people of Pittsburgh”, the city where he made his money.
Starting as a penniless immigrant, he became a millionaire in his mid 20s by shrewd aggressive leadership in Oil and Railroads. One of his favorite projects is funding public libraries throughout the United States. He sailed today for a summer long stay at his estate in his native Scotland.
